Possessing nitrous oxide for psychoactive use was made illegal in the UK on Wednesday. Offenders can face up to two years in prison, while dealers can receive up to 14 years. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, has become popular among young people as a recreational drug. Prolonged use can lead to health issues, and the canisters have contributed to litter and anti-social behavior.
The ban was proposed by the Conservative government and is part of their efforts to strengthen law and order policies ahead of an expected general election. Authorities hope the ban will send a clear message about the dangers and illegality of nitrous oxide. Those caught with the drug could face fines, community punishments, or even jail time for repeat offenses.
The maximum sentence for production and supply of the drug has been doubled to 14 years. It’s important to note that legitimate uses of nitrous oxide in healthcare and other industries are exempt from the ban.
