Public Health minister faces backlash in regards to Cannabis

cannabis Bangkok one Jan 9 2024

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has faced criticism from pro-legalisation activists in Thailand after approving a new draft of the cannabis and hemp control bill.

Activists claim that the minister is betraying his commitment to public consultation by not allowing for open discourse before submitting the draft to the Cabinet. Prasitchai Nunual, secretary-general for Thailand’s Cannabis Future Network, expressed disappointment on social media, emphasizing the importance of public involvement in policy drafting to ensure evidence-based outcomes.

He also highlighted the government’s inconsistent approach to regulating cannabis, methamphetamine pills, and alcohol. The new draft stipulates that cannabis usage will require a doctor’s prescription, while possession of five methamphetamine pills is not considered a criminal offense.

Activists urged the Public Health Ministry to enhance officials’ understanding of these substances and warned against allowing political interests to influence policy. They argue that the draft serves the interests of certain groups facing declining sales rather than the public interest. Minister Cholnan clarified that the proposed bill does not permit recreational cannabis use and emphasizes the importance of proper procedures for medical use.
