Thailand will officially enter summer next Friday, with temperatures expected to be slightly lower than last year, according to the weather service.
This year’s summer will run from February 28 to mid-May, announced Sugunyanee Yavinchan, Director-General of the Meteorological Department.
Ms. Sugunyanee mentioned that the temperatures would be more moderate due to a cooler La Niña, which could help reduce the heat and bring rainfall up to 20% above average over the three-month period. However, summer rain is expected to be brief and localized.
Forecasters predict that temperatures will range between 35°C and 36°C this summer, slightly lower than last year’s average of 37.5°C.
The department also warned that 14 provinces in the northern and northeastern regions should prepare for intense heat, with temperatures potentially exceeding 42°C in April, when summer typically peaks.
The provinces expected to experience extreme heat are:
- Chaiyaphum
- Chiang Mai
- Khon Kaen
- Lampang
- Lamphun
- Loei
- Mae Hong Son
- Nong Bua Lamphu
- Nong Khai
- Phitsanulok
- Sukhothai
- Tak
- Udon Thani
- Uttaradit
