The water of Chao Phraya and 21 other rivers unsafe for splashing

According to the Pollution Control Department, Songkran revellers in Bangkok and Nonthaburi province are urged not to use water from the Chao Phraya River for splashing during the Songkran festival since it is polluted with high levels of Fibrobacteres-Chlorobi-Bacteroidetes (FCB) bacteria (PCD).

Water from the other 21 rivers and natural water sources was likewise found to be inappropriate for splashing due to excessive levels of germs. The Nan River in Phichit’s Bang Mun Nak district, the Yom River in Sukhothai’s Sawankhalok district, the Tha Chin River in Mueang district of Samut Sakhon, Samphran district of Nakhon Pathom and Mueang district of Suphan Buri, the Wang River in Mueang district of Lampang, the Lam Pao River in Mueang district of Kalasin, the Songkhram River in Akat Amnuai

The PCD stated that water samples taken by the department in February and March found the sea water at 77 beaches around Thailand to be mainly safe.

The agency has identified the top 10 beaches in terms of saltwater quality. They are:

Chumphon Province’s Thug Wua Laen

Hat Rin on Pha-ngan Island Hat Bang Ben in Ranong Hat Kai Bae on Chang Island Hat Sai Kaew on Samet Island in Rayong

Surat Thani’s Hat Chaweng Noi is located on Samui Island.

Hat Hin Ngam in Nakhon Si Thammarat Hat Pak Bara in Satun Hat Charn Damri in Ranong Hat Pak Koh on Khor Khao Island in Phang-nga province
