NZ tourist bangkok one March 20 2024

From the case where 2 New Zealand tourists driving motorcycles violated traffic laws, attempted to flee, committed robbery, and assaulted police officers in the area of Chalong Police Station, Phuket:

Lieutenant Colonel Ekarat Plaiduang, the Superintendent of Chalong Police Station, gave an interview to Jor.100 Radio Station regarding the incident involving the tourists. He mentioned that after inspecting the condition of Captain Somsak, the Traffic Police Commander, who was involved in the incident, and comforting him, it was reported that Captain Somsak suffered minor injuries on his fingers and legs. Subsequently, the doctor allowed him to travel back home to rest and provided necessary assistance and benefits to ensure his well-being in accordance with his rights as an injured officer.

Regarding the events that transpired, Captain Somsak stated that after the two suspects attempted to flee, he followed them until he managed to control the situation. Both suspects tried to bribe him for their release, but he rejected and informed them that the officers had to uphold the law. He then attempted to take photos as evidence but the tourists were displeased and interfered, leading to a physical altercation. One of the suspects even attempted to grab a gun, resulting in a warning shot being fired. Fortunately, backup arrived just in time to control the situation and apprehend both suspects.

As of now, both suspects are under police custody at Chalong Police Station for further investigation before seeking court authorization for continued detention. It was found that both suspects entered Thailand on March 11th with tourist visas. Chalong Police Station will proceed with the necessary legal actions, and the relevant authorities will handle the case accordingly.
