Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, as Russia escalates its military assault on Ukraine.

Overnight, Russia launched one of its largest aerial strikes, firing approximately 40 missiles and around 580 drones at various regions in Ukraine. Zelensky reported that at least three civilians were killed and dozens injured during the barrage.

He stated he would hold “a meeting with the President of the United States” to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and potential sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that the talks would take place in the context of ongoing the conflict.

Ukraine continues to demand Western-backed security assurances to help prevent future Russian attacks. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any Western troops operating in Ukraine would be seen as legitimate targets, rejecting Kyiv’s calls for peace.

A U.S.-led effort to quickly end the war has faced setbacks, with Russia ruling out negotiations with Zelensky’s government, a move Kyiv considers essential for peace. Zelensky warned that sanctions may be imposed if leaders fail to meet or if a ceasefire isn’t reached, adding that Ukraine is prepared for direct discussions with Putin—bilateral or trilateral—but Kyiv claims Moscow isn’t ready for such talks.

Earlier, Zelensky reported that Russia’s latest aerial assault included a missile with cluster munitions striking a residential building in Dnipro. Photos shared on social media showed cars and structures engulfed in flames, with rescue workers helping injured individuals amid debris.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the attacks resulted in one death and 26 injuries, with one individual seriously wounded, according to regional military head Sergiy Lysak.

Ongoing Conflict and Tensions

The missile strikes occurred shortly after reports that three Russian fighter jets violated Estonia’s airspace, a NATO member on the alliance’s eastern flank—a claim Moscow denied. This incident heightened Western fears of a dangerous provocation, especially following last week’s incident involving Russian drones over Poland.

Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s call for “joint solutions” to combat drone threats, urging cooperation with other nations to counter the threat. Meanwhile, Russia announced the capture of the village of Berezove in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Fighting continues intensely, particularly in the northeastern Kharkiv region’s Kupiansk, a key railway hub recaptured by Ukraine in 2022. Both sides report ongoing hostilities, with Russia claiming to have repelled “massive” Ukrainian attacks in the Volgograd and Rostov regions, while reports indicate some damage to fuel and energy facilities in the Samara region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 149 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 27 downed over Saratov and 15 over Samara.

Despite multiple rounds of peace negotiations—including three meetings in Istanbul—little progress has been made. Russia’s stance remains firm, insisting Ukraine fully cede the eastern Donbas region, which Ukraine rejects, seeking instead deployment of European peacekeeping forces—a demand Moscow considers unacceptable.
