Bangkok to consider 50 Kph speed limit

Bangkok speed limit Bangkok one Feb 13 2024

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is seeking the cooperation of the police to implement a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour on 40 roads located in inner Bangkok and around significant residential areas.

According to Thaiphat Tanasombatkul, the director-general of the BMA’s Traffic and Transportation Department, this request aims to lessen traffic accidents and enhance road safety. The BMA has introduced various policies and measures to prioritize road safety, including the application of appropriate engineering practices, the implementation of speed limits on roads passing through communities and residential areas, the prosecution of intoxicated drivers, educational campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of road accidents, and the repair of unsafe roads.

In collaboration with Chulalongkorn University, the BMA has evaluated the safety standards of roads across Bangkok using the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) appraisal criteria. This assessment highlighted that the existing maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour in the city is deemed excessively fast and unsafe for motorists, cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.

Consequently, the department is recommending to the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) to reduce the speed limit on 40 roads – including Yaowarat, Banthat Thong, Phra Arthit, Charoen Krung and Silom – situated in inner city areas and residential zones to 50 kilometers per hour.

Mr. Thaiphat mentioned that once the new limit is established, the department plans to install signs to alert motorists about the revised restriction. Additionally, speed cameras will be deployed to apprehend violators.
