Over 90% of road traffic violations recorded between December 30 and December 31, 2025, were related to alcohol consumption, according to recent statistics. However, at least one fatality was attributed to improper use of a map application.

Pol Capt Piya Raksakul, director-general of the Department of Probation, reported on Thursday that over 1,150 violations were documented during the second day of intensified enforcement efforts.

Data from the last day of 2025 indicated that 1,093 violations, or 95.04%, involved driving under the influence (DUI), with an additional 56 cases linked to other substances. Only one instance of speeding was recorded on that day.

During the “seven dangerous days” period, on just the second day, there were 271 accidents resulting in 53 fatalities. These figures prompted authorities to reinforce strict measures targeting speeding and DUI.

Across the two-day enforcement period, a total of 1,473 offenses were reported, with 1,366 cases (92.74%) related to drink driving. This reflects a decrease of 162 cases from the same period last year, according to Pol Capt Piya.

The provinces with the highest number of drink-driving incidents were Nonthaburi with 174 cases, Bangkok with 131, and Samut Prakan with 127.

Tragically, a fatal accident occurred when two women accidentally killed a university student after their vehicle struck his motorcycle, sending him into a canal. The crash was discovered early on New Year’s morning on Plasin Road in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district.

Authorities recovered a severely damaged Toyota Vios from Khlong Bang Bua, along with the body of 19-year-old student Patithep. His Vespa motorcycle was also retrieved in poor condition.

The two women involved, identified only as Malee, 28, and Sukontha, 30, were rescued and transported to Paolo Kaset Hospital. Witnesses reported that their vehicle collided at high speed with the motorcycle while entering a turn.

Malee claimed they were driving at a normal speed, focusing on their GPS, and only realized they had hit something moments before veering off the road into the water. They also stated they did not see the motorcycle before or during their escape from the submerged vehicle.

Both women have been tested for alcohol, and legal proceedings are underway while Patithep’s body undergoes an autopsy.
