During the upcoming Loy Krathong Festival on November 27-28, Chiang Mai airport will see 160 flight changes after 7pm, according to deputy director Wisut Khamyod. These changes include 101 cancelled flights and 59 rescheduled flights, accounting for 47% of normal flight operations.
Of the cancellations, 77 are domestic flights and 24 are international, while the rescheduled flights include 51 domestic and eight international flights.
Wisut assured that these adjustments are unlikely to disrupt air travel as airlines have already informed passengers in advance, allowing them to plan accordingly. The airport will also implement heightened security measures during the festival, including random vehicle and baggage checks in line with international standards.
Additionally, parking in front of the passenger terminal will be prohibited.
Travellers are advised to leave for the airport early due to expected heavy traffic during the festival. The airport has also reminded public and private organizations, local administrations, temples, educational institutes, and communities in the air safety zone about safety measures.
These measures include a ban on flying lanterns, balloons, rockets, drones, and other objects within the aviation safety zone, which spans a 4.6-kilometer area on both sides of the runway and an 18.5-kilometer distance between the ends of the runway.
Furthermore, airborne lanterns are prohibited in six districts of the province, namely Muang, Hang Dong, Saraphi, Mae Rim, Sansai, and San Pa Tong.
