Facial Recognition to Replace Boarding Passes at Six Airports in Thailand

An automated biometric identification system utilizing facial recognition technology is set to be launched at six airports in Thailand later this year, allowing passengers to present their physical ID just once.

The system will be operational for domestic travelers starting on November 1 and for international travelers on December 1, as announced by Kirati Kitmanawat, the director of the Airport Authority of Thailand.

To participate in the system, passengers must consent to share their identification information during the check-in process at counters or through self-service kiosks at the airports.

This technology will electronically gather passengers’ biometric data and travel itineraries, enabling them to move from baggage drop to boarding gate without the need to show passports or boarding passes. Each registration will apply to a single journey only.

The six airports implementing this system are Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Mae Fah Luang/Chiang Rai International Airport, Phuket International Airport, and Hat Yai International Airport.

Passenger traffic at these airports has increased nearly 20% in September and October compared to the same period last year, and this trend is anticipated to continue rising next year, according to Mr. Kirati.
