More Than a Million Patients a Year Choose Thailand's Hospitals
Thailand has cemented its position as Asia's leading destination for medical tourism, with more than a million foreign patients traveling to the country each year for medical and surgical procedures. For years, the Thai government has built policies aimed at developing the country into a global medical and wellness hub, from inviting international patients to experience Thai medical care to strengthening private and public health sectors and promoting wellness services such as preventive care, rehabilitation and traditional Thai medicine, according to a report published July 21 by The Manila Times.
Speaking on the sidelines of International Healthcare Week (IHL) 2026, held July 8-10 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand's Ministry of Health chief Pattana Promphat said the country can arrange nearly every step of a patient's journey, from medical visas and appointment scheduling to accommodation and follow-up care after patients return home. "We are not only looking at how to fix the problem but we are moving on to prevention as well, so a lot of wellness and medical tourism," Pattana said. The four-day event, organized by Informa Markets together with Thailand's Department of Health Service Support, drew more than 1,200 companies and healthcare and medical industry experts from over 100 countries. Opening the event, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the government is "fully committed to driving the medical and healthcare industry as a key new growth engine," with the goal of establishing Thailand as a world-class global medical hub.
Global Rankings and New Campaigns Reinforce the Push
The push comes as Thailand's healthcare system has drawn international recognition. A 2026 survey by Numbeo, the world's largest crowd-sourced quality-of-life database, ranked Thailand eighth globally for healthcare with a score of 77.5 points, behind Taiwan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Japan, Austria, Ecuador and Finland. Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksameesangjan said the ranking reflects Thailand's efficient healthcare management and broad access to medical services, pointing to the country's Universal Coverage Scheme, commonly known as the 30-baht or Gold Card scheme, which allows eligible Thai citizens to access a wide range of medical services using only their national identification card.
Thailand's appeal as a hub is also underpinned by its hospital infrastructure. The country has 65 hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission International, the highest number in ASEAN, according to Kanyarat Kuisuwan, director of the Office of Integrated Medical Industry Promotion at the Department of Health Service Support. Earlier in July, the Tourism Authority of Thailand also launched Thailand Health Excellence 2026, a campaign built around the slogan "Healing is the New Luxury" that introduces 10 curated "Signature Health Journeys" spanning medical care, post-treatment recovery, preventive wellness and healthy aging. "Thailand's greatest strength lies not only in its medical excellence, but also in its unique ability to integrate medical excellence, science-based wellness and science-based local wisdom with nature, culture and heartfelt hospitality," said TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool. Officials expect Thailand's medical tourism sector to keep growing over the next three to five years as the country adapts to an aging population and advances in areas such as medical AI and cell and gene therapies.
