Suspect in several cyanide poisonings faces murder charges

In connection with the deaths of eight persons who were reportedly poisoned with cyanide, police in Thailand have charged 36-year-old “Srarat” with murder, according to Pol Col Anek Taosuparb, deputy commander of the Crime Suppression Division.

These are the eight victims:

Daranee died on December 13, 2020, in the Samphran district of Nakhon Pathom. Surat died on January 6, 2021, in Kanchanaburi. Kanikar died on September 12, 2022, in Ratchaburi.
In Kanchanaburi, one victim, Kantima, made it through the murderous assault.

Siriporn, a police officer who passed away on April 14 in Ratchaburi, and Nipa, a second police officer, who passed away on April 1 in Kanchanaburi, were the subjects of two prior instances for which arrest warrants had been issued. After autopsies in both cases, cyanide traces were discovered in the victims’ blood.

It was claimed that the suspect traveled to the Ban Pong district of Ratchaburi with 32-year-old Siriporn, a participant in a “share” money lending scheme, Srarat, and others to release fish into the Mae Klong River as part of a merit-making rite. She passed out at the pier, and after her body was taken there for an examination, the presence of cyanide was determined to be there, the Police General Hospital’s Institute of Forensic Medicine received it.

The discovery of cyanide metabolites in the body of Siriporn and the confirmation of her connection to Srarat gave the police their first significant lead. This led to the suspect’s arrest on April 25 and a thorough investigation that turned up a number of suspicious deaths that were all connected to the suspect, according to the police.

Through financial transactions in the “share” scheme, car and land mortgages, and other borrowing, all of the deceased victims were linked to Srarat, claims the CSD.

Yesterday (Saturday), Rapee Chamnanrua met with Pol Col Anek to deliver a statement regarding the matter and to provide the police with the evidence he had gathered. Rapee Chamnanrua had been asked by Siriporn’s family to assist them in looking into her strange death.

A nurse at a hospital in Thon Buri who is reportedly a close friend of the suspect will be questioned by police, according to the CSD deputy commander.
