Thai Parliament security has been stepped up in preparation for the gathering

In anticipation of a gathering planned by the “United Front for Thammasat and Demonstration” (UFTD), which aims to persuade senators to support Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat as Thailand’s 30th prime minister, police have reinforced security around the parliament building today (Tuesday).

Today’s extraordinary session of the Senate will be used to discuss whether to approve candidates for the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the Election Commission, and the Audit Council.

To keep the peace and stop demonstrators from entering the parliament grounds, hundreds of crowd control police, including plainclothes officers with officers from Taopoon and Bang Pho police stations, have been deployed.

The responsibility for upholding security within the compound falls to parliament police.

The municipal government is providing portable restrooms for the duration of the event, which is planned to begin at 5 and extend until 8 pm.

Pita’s candidacy for prime minister must receive at least 376 votes from senators and MPs combined. Pita still needs at least 63 votes from the Senate because the coalition partnership of eight parties, led by Move Forward, has a total of 313 House votes.
