Thai Capital Climbs Global Rankings on Traveller Sentiment
Bangkok has secured eighth place worldwide in the 2026 Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index, placing the Thai capital ahead of Okinawa and Chicago and just behind Rome. The index, published by Yanolja Research on July 16, evaluated 261 cities and released rankings for the top 200 based on how travellers discuss and emotionally respond to destinations across social media.
The index was developed jointly by Yanolja Research, Purdue University's CHRIBA Institute in the United States and Kyung Hee University's H&T Analytics Centre in Seoul. Researchers analysed global social media conversations across 14 languages, using data supplied by Brandwatch, to measure both the volume and sentiment of traveller commentary on each city. New York topped the overall rankings, a result researchers attributed to its combination of global visibility and consistently positive visitor sentiment.
Ranking Comes Amid Mixed Signals for Thai Tourism
Bangkok's strong showing in the sentiment-based index comes even as Thailand's broader tourism sector faces headwinds, with tourist arrivals down nearly 3 percent so far this year while competing destinations such as Vietnam and Japan post gains. Tourism officials have pointed to the city's food scene, cultural attractions and hospitality infrastructure as key drivers of its continued appeal among international travellers.
The index's methodology, which relies on social media sentiment rather than raw visitor numbers, suggests Bangkok maintains strong brand recognition and positive traveller perception even as overall arrival figures soften. Officials said the ranking underscores the importance of the city's global reputation as authorities look to reverse the recent decline in visitor numbers heading into the peak travel season.
