Arrivals Top 18.5 Million Despite Flight and Safety Headwinds
Thailand welcomed more than 18.5 million foreign tourists between January 1 and August 1, 2026, generating over 896 billion baht in revenue, according to tourism officials. The figure represents a 3.19% decline compared with the same period last year, with the slowdown attributed to security concerns over unrest in the southern provinces and a significant reduction in flight capacity from India.
China remained the top source market for the kingdom, while long-haul markets showed resilience and arrivals from South Korea surged. New routes have continued to open, including a daily Bangkok-Phu Quoc service launched by Sun PhuQuoc Airways on August 8, and a direct Bali-Phuket service planned for late 2026 following an agreement between the Tourism Authority and booking platform Traveloka.
Government Targets Two Million Russian Visitors by Year-End
Russia has emerged as the kingdom's fourth-largest source market in 2026, with more than 1.1 million visitors recorded between January and August. Tourism officials are now targeting two million Russian arrivals by the end of the year, with both countries planning additional flights, enhanced tourist safety measures and closer sporting ties.
Officials said the push to expand Russian arrivals comes even as the market navigates the fallout from a high-profile murder case in Pattaya earlier this year, with authorities stressing that Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya all remain open and safe for Russian visitors. The government said maintaining momentum in long-haul and Chinese arrivals, alongside new flight routes, would be key to reaching its full-year tourism targets.
