Thailand recorded 16,210,890 foreign tourist arrivals between January 1 and July 4, 2026, a 3.11% decline from the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Despite the dip, the country's tourism sector generated an estimated 782.57 billion baht in revenue during the period, underscoring the continued economic weight of inbound travel even as arrival numbers soften.
Arrivals Slip as Key Markets Shift
China remained Thailand's largest source market with 2,654,728 arrivals, followed by Malaysia (2,109,956), India (1,239,023), Russia (1,022,483) and South Korea (596,673). Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said the ministry is closely monitoring shifts in traveler behavior across these markets, noting that currency fluctuations and competition from neighboring destinations have weighed on overall numbers even as high-spending segments hold steady.
Ministry Banks on Summer Travel Season
Weekly arrivals are already showing signs of recovery. In the week of June 28 to July 4 alone, Thailand welcomed 533,697 visitors, led again by China (83,492) and Malaysia (78,306), with India (32,657), Taiwan (20,625) and Austria (20,498) rounding out the top five. Officials expect arrivals to climb further between July 5 and 11 as summer school holidays begin across China and Europe, historically one of the busiest windows for inbound travel to Thailand. The ministry said it would continue targeted marketing campaigns in key markets to help close the year-on-year gap before the end of the summer season.
