Thailand's tourism sector is picking up pace this July as international airlines expand direct routes to Bangkok and Phuket, even as the government prepares to shorten visa-free entry for dozens of nationalities. Foreign arrivals reached 16.21 million between January 1 and July 4, 2026, generating 782.57 billion baht in visitor spending, according to Thailand's Tourism and Sports Ministry.
Summer Arrivals Show Signs of Recovery
Overall arrivals remain down 3.11% year-on-year, but the ministry is counting on the summer holiday season to narrow the gap. In the week of June 28 to July 4 alone, Thailand welcomed 533,697 foreign visitors, and officials expect numbers to climb further from July 5 to 11 as school holidays continue across China and Europe. China remains the largest source market, followed by Malaysia, India, Russia and South Korea.
New Direct Flights Strengthen Ties With Europe and the Middle East
Thai Airways International relaunched non-stop service between Bangkok and Amsterdam on July 1, its first direct link to the Dutch capital in three decades, operating once daily. Emirates has also expanded its Dubai-Phuket route to three daily flights using its new Airbus A350 aircraft, deepening connections between Thailand, Europe and the Middle East. On the ground, the Tourism Authority of Thailand welcomed the opening of the new Sadao Road linking Thailand and Malaysia, a move expected to ease cross-border travel and trade.
Visa-Free Stay Set to Shrink From 60 to 30 Days
Alongside the positive travel news, Thai officials have confirmed plans to cut the visa-free stay period for nationals of 93 countries from 60 days to 30 days, unwinding a policy first introduced in July 2024. A firm start date has not yet been announced, but travelers planning extended trips to Thailand should follow official channels closely before booking.
What It Means for Travelers
Thailand has been fully open to international visitors since February 1, 2026, with no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements at entry. For now, the message for travelers is largely positive: more direct flight options into Bangkok and Phuket, plus a tourism board actively courting summer travelers. Anyone planning a longer stay, however, should double-check visa allowances for their nationality before finalizing travel dates, as the shorter visa-free window could affect long-stay itineraries later this year.
