In a survey conducted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), it was found that following the pandemic, foreign tourists are showing a preference for higher spending on luxurious accommodations, even with increased airfares, with an average expenditure of 50,900 baht per trip.

Key Findings:

  1. Despite escalated airfares, foreign tourists are opting to invest more in upscale lodging following the pandemic, resulting in an average trip expenditure of 50,900 baht.
  2. There has been a noticeable shift in dining habits, with a rise in tourists favoring street food over conventional dining. This shift has led to a decrease in the average spending on food and beverages.
  3. The survey indicates a surge in the utilization of online platforms for travel planning, while travel agents and tour operators continue to hold significance. The TAT aims to utilize social media platforms, such as TikTok, to target and engage with potential tourists.

The survey highlights an evolving trend in tourists’ dining preferences, showcasing a preference for street food, with the percentage of tourists opting for this rising from 63% to 77.3%. As a consequence of this shift, the average spending on food and beverages has decreased from 5,875 baht in 2019 to 4,094 baht. Additionally, tourists hailing from the Middle East have been identified as the highest spenders.

While online platforms are increasingly being utilized for travel arrangements, traditional travel agents continue to play a significant role in travel planning. TAT intends to concentrate on digital strategies and collaborate with influencers to harness the potential of social media platforms in promoting Thailand’s destinations.
