Stricter Traffic Regulations Requested

The Road Safety Operation Centre (RSOC) has urged law enforcement agencies to enforce traffic laws rigorously and implement proactive measures to enhance road safety during Songkran.

Kajohn Srichavanotai, the Deputy Interior Ministry’s permanent secretary, stated on Monday that motorcycles have been the leading cause of road accidents in the past three days, with failure to wear helmets and drunk driving contributing significantly to the casualty rates.

The RSOC is advocating for more comprehensive measures, including the establishment of community checkpoints to monitor dangerous behavior, as well as campaigns to remind individuals to wear safety gear and avoid drinking while driving.

In addition, authorities are deploying mobile units for proactive enforcement, increasing patrols, and ensuring that no alcohol is sold in areas designated for Songkran celebrations.

Local agencies are also being tasked with overseeing the sale of alcohol to minors and monitoring alcohol sales outside of permitted hours. Mr. Kajohn cautioned that alcohol vendors could face legal repercussions if an underage individual involved in a road accident is found to have consumed alcohol.
